1993 Volkswagen Golf – Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Guide

Important Notice: This procedure is only applicable to 1993 Volkswagen Golf models equipped with the factory-installed keyless entry and alarm system. It will not work with Hella systems or aftermarket alarm kits. If your vehicle was not originally equipped with keyless entry, this procedure will only be successful if a factory alarm module is present. A white control unit located behind the headlight switch typically indicates a factory system. Before you begin, confirm that the FCC ID on your remote fob matches the system installed in the vehicle. Compatible FCC IDs include NBG730956 and M36HU01WT. Remotes with other FCC IDs will not function with this procedure. If you’re unsure of compatibility, consult a dealer before continuing.

Programming Instructions:

  • Step 1: Ensure all remote fobs have fresh batteries. Weak or dead batteries may prevent successful programming.
  • Step 2: Insert the first key into the ignition and turn it to the ON position (do not start the engine).
  • Step 3: Insert a second key into the driver’s side door lock. Turn the key to the unlock position (counterclockwise) and hold it in that position until you hear the horn beep three times. This typically takes between 10 to 15 seconds.
  • Step 4: After hearing the three beeps, return the door key to the center (neutral) position, but leave the key in the lock.
  • Step 5: Press any button on the first remote fob. The horn will beep once, indicating successful programming.
  • Step 6: If you have additional remote fobs, press a button on each one in sequence. The horn will beep twice for the second fob, three times for the third, and so on. Note: All remote fobs must be programmed in the same session. Any fob not included during this session will be removed from memory and will no longer function.
  • Step 7: Once all remotes have been programmed, turn the door key again to the unlock position (left) and hold it until the horn beeps three times to signal the end of programming mode.
  • Step 8: Turn off the ignition and remove both keys from the vehicle.
  • Step 9: Test each remote to verify proper operation of the lock and unlock functions.
