1993 Volkswagen Jetta – Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Guide

Important Notice: This programming guide is specifically for the 1993 Volkswagen Jetta equipped with a factory alarm system. It is important to note that the vehicle’s FCC ID on the remote fob must match the system’s requirements; common FCC IDs for this model are NBG730956 and M36HU01WT. This procedure will not work with the Hella system or if the FCC IDs do not match.

Programming Instructions:

  • Step 1: Verify all remote fobs for correct FCC ID. If unsure of the FCC ID, consult with a Volkswagen dealer to determine the correct type needed for your Jetta.
  • Step 2: Ensure all remote fobs intended for programming are present, as the process requires programming all fobs simultaneously to avoid deactivating any that are not included.
  • Step 3: Insert the key into the ignition and turn it to the 'ON' position without starting the engine.
  • Step 4: Insert a second key into the driver’s door lock. Turn this key counterclockwise to the unlock position and hold until the vehicle’s horn beeps three times, indicating the system is ready to program the fobs. This may take approximately 10-15 seconds.
  • Step 5: After hearing the three beeps, maintain the key in the unlock position, but return it to the neutral center position without removing it from the door lock.
  • Step 6: Press any button on the first remote fob. The horn will emit a single beep to confirm successful programming of that fob.
  • Step 7: For additional fobs, immediately press a button on each subsequent remote. The horn will beep consecutively to acknowledge each fob (e.g., two beeps for the second fob, three beeps for the third, etc.).
  • Step 8: Once all fobs are programmed, turn the door key counterclockwise again until the horn beeps three times, signaling the end of the programming mode.
  • Step 9: Remove both the ignition key and the door key.
  • Step 10: Test each remote fob to ensure functionality. Check that each fob locks and unlocks the doors effectively.
  • Step 11: If a remote does not function or the horn did not beep during programming, check the remote’s battery and ensure it is correctly installed. Repeat the programming steps if necessary.
