1993 Volkswagen Passat – Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Guide

Important Notice: This procedure applies only to 1993 Volkswagen Passat models equipped with the factory-installed keyless entry and alarm system. It is not compatible with Hella-brand systems or aftermarket alarm systems. If your vehicle was not originally equipped with a factory remote system, this procedure will only work if a factory alarm module is installed—typically identified by a white control unit located behind the headlight switch. Before beginning, ensure that the FCC ID printed on the remote matches the one supported by your vehicle. Known compatible FCC IDs for this system include NBG730956 and M36HU01WT. Remotes with different FCC IDs will not be programmable. If you’re unsure which FCC ID is correct, consult a dealer for confirmation.

Programming Instructions:

  • Step 1: Check that the battery in each remote fob is fully charged and functional before attempting programming.
  • Step 2: Insert one key into the ignition switch and turn it to the ON position. Do not start the engine.
  • Step 3: Insert a second key into the driver’s side door lock. Turn it to the unlock position (counterclockwise) and hold it there until the horn beeps three times. This may take 10 to 15 seconds.
  • Step 4: Once you hear three beeps, return the door key to the center (neutral) position, but leave it in the lock.
  • Step 5: Press any button on the first remote fob. The horn will beep once, confirming successful programming.
  • Step 6: If you are programming more than one remote, press a button on each additional fob in sequence. The horn will beep twice for the second fob, three times for the third, and so on. Note: All remote fobs must be programmed within the same session. Any remotes not programmed at this time will be erased from memory.
  • Step 7: After all remotes have been programmed, turn the door key again to the unlock position (left) and hold it until the horn beeps three times. This signals that the system has exited programming mode.
  • Step 8: Turn off the ignition and remove both keys from the ignition and door lock.
  • Step 9: Test each remote to ensure all functions—such as locking, unlocking, and trunk release—work properly.
