1994 Volkswagen Passat – Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Guide

Important Notice: This programming procedure applies only to 1994 Volkswagen Passat models equipped with the factory-installed keyless entry and alarm system. It is not compatible with Hella-brand systems or aftermarket alarm modules. If your vehicle did not originally include remote keyless entry, programming will only work if a factory control unit is present. These systems are often identified by a white module located behind the headlight switch. Before beginning, ensure that the FCC ID printed on the back of your remote fob matches the version supported by the vehicle. Known compatible FCC IDs include NBG730956 and M36HU01WT. Remotes with mismatched FCC IDs will not be accepted by the vehicle’s system. If you’re unsure, consult a dealer to verify the correct part.

Programming Instructions:

  • Step 1: Verify that the battery inside each remote fob is new and functional to ensure successful programming.
  • Step 2: Insert one key into the ignition switch and turn it to the ON position. Do not start the vehicle.
  • Step 3: Insert a second key into the driver’s door lock cylinder. Turn the key to the unlock position (counterclockwise) and hold it until the horn beeps three times. This process typically takes 10 to 15 seconds.
  • Step 4: Once the horn beeps three times, return the door key to the center (neutral) position, but leave it inserted in the lock.
  • Step 5: Press any button on the first remote fob. The horn will beep once, confirming that the fob has been successfully programmed.
  • Step 6: If you have additional remotes to program, press a button on each one in sequence. The horn will beep twice for the second fob, three times for the third, and so on. Note: All remotes must be programmed during the same session. Any remotes not included will be erased from the vehicle’s memory and will no longer function.
  • Step 7: When all desired remotes have been programmed, turn the door key once again to the unlock position and hold it until the horn beeps three times, indicating that the system has exited programming mode.
  • Step 8: Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position and remove both keys from the ignition and door.
  • Step 9: Test each programmed fob to confirm full functionality of the lock, unlock, and trunk release features.
