1996 BMW 3 Series – Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Instructions

Important Notice: The 1996 BMW 3 Series supports onboard programming of keyless entry remote fobs. Follow the steps below precisely. Up to four remotes can be programmed; when a new one is added, the oldest stored remote will be deleted.

Programming Procedure:

  • Step 1: Make sure the vehicle is unlocked, and all doors, the hood, and the trunk are closed.
  • Step 2: Open the trunk lid and leave it open.
  • Step 3: Open the driver’s door.
  • Step 4: Sit in the driver’s seat and close the driver’s door behind you.
  • Step 5: Insert the key into the ignition. Steps 1 through 5 must be completed within 45 seconds.
  • Step 6: Turn the key from the OFF position to the second position (just before engine start) five times in rapid succession. This must be completed within 10 seconds.
  • Step 7: Open the driver’s door.
  • Step 8: Close the driver’s door again.
  • Step 9: On the remote, press the large button once.
  • Step 10: Press the small button once.
  • Step 11: Press and hold the large button until the remote’s indicator light flashes once.
  • Step 12: Press and hold the small button until the indicator light flashes once again.
  • Step 13: Repeat steps 9 through 12 for any additional remotes. A maximum of four remotes can be recognized.
  • Step 14: Open the driver’s door.
  • Step 15: Exit the vehicle.
  • Step 16: Close the trunk lid.
  • Step 17: Close the driver’s door.
  • Step 18: Programming is now complete. Test each remote to ensure all functions are working properly.
