Programming Guide for 1996 Buick Riviera Keyless Entry Remote Fob
(Step-by-Step Remote Fob Setup – Onboard Programming Method)
Important Reminder: All remotes must be programmed during the same session. Any remote not included in this procedure will be erased and must be reprogrammed.
Programming Instructions:
- Step 1: Insert the ignition key into the ignition cylinder and leave it in the OFF position.
- Step 2: Locate the OBDII diagnostic port beneath the driver's side dashboard. → Note: The port is wider at the top. Although terminals are not labeled, identify terminal 8 and terminal 4 by position.
- Step 3: Ensure there are metal contact pins present in terminals 8 and 4. Using a suitable jumper wire, connect terminal 8 to terminal 4. → Leave the wire connected throughout the entire programming process. → The vehicle will respond by locking and then unlocking the doors to confirm entry into programming mode.
- Step 4: Turn the ignition key to the ON position (as far as it will go without starting the engine).
- Step 5: On the first remote, press and hold both the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons simultaneously. → After up to 30 seconds, the vehicle will again lock and unlock the doors, confirming the remote has been successfully programmed. → Release the buttons.
- Step 6: If you are programming additional remotes, repeat Step 5 within one minute for each.
- Step 7: Once all remotes are programmed, remove the jumper wire from the OBDII port.
Additional Notes: A maximum of two remotes can typically be programmed to this vehicle. Ensure each remote has a functional battery before beginning. If the vehicle does not respond as described, recheck terminal positions and restart the process.
