Programming Guide for 1996 Smart Keyless Entry Remote Fob – Cadillac Seville

Important Notice: The 1996 Seville supports onboard programming for remote key fobs. The process differs depending on whether the vehicle is equipped with an analog or digital instrument cluster. Ensure you identify your system type before beginning. Programming must be completed within 30 seconds during key steps or the procedure will time out.

Procedure for Vehicles with Analog Instrument Cluster:

  • Step 1: Enter Diagnostic Mode Press and hold the OFF and WARM buttons on the Climate Control Panel at the same time. All dashboard indicators will light up briefly, then go blank—this confirms entry into diagnostic mode.
  • Step 2: Access Remote Programming Menu Press the PASSENGER COOLER button repeatedly until the display reads RFA. Press FAN UP to proceed. If the display reads RFA DATA, press FAN DOWN. If the display reads RFA OVERRIDE, press FAN UP.
  • Step 3: Initiate Programming When RFA 500 NO OVERRIDE appears, press FAN DOWN. Wait for RFA 501 PROGRAM FOB #1 to appear, then press FAN UP. The Driver Information Center will display 0—press the WARM button repeatedly until it shows 99.
  • Step 4: Program the First Remote Press and hold the TRUNK button on the remote. While holding it, press and hold the LOCK button for 1 second. Continue holding both buttons for a total of 3 seconds. The door locks will cycle to confirm successful programming. If the process is not completed within 30 seconds of selecting ""99"", the system will exit and you must restart from Step 2.
  • Step 5: Program a Second Remote (Optional) Press FAN DOWN until RFA 502 PROGRAM FOB #2 appears. Press FAN UP, then repeat Step 4 with the second remote.
  • Step 6: Exit Programming Mode Press any of the following buttons to exit: AUTO, MODE UP, MODE DOWN, or RESET.

Procedure for Vehicles with Digital Instrument Cluster:

  • Step 1: Enter Diagnostic Mode Press and hold the OFF and WARM buttons on the Climate Control Center simultaneously. All indicator lights will flash, then the display will go blank and enter diagnostic mode.
  • Step 2: Navigate to Remote Programming Press FAN DOWN until RFA appears on the display. Press FAN UP to select. Press FAN DOWN until RFA OVERRIDE is displayed. Press FAN UP again. When NO OVRD RF 500 appears, press FAN UP once more.
  • Step 3: Begin Programming When PGM FOBL 501 appears, press the WARM button. The number 99 will appear in the upper left corner of the display, confirming that the system is ready.
  • Step 4: Program the First Remote Press and hold the TRUNK button on the remote. While holding it, press and hold the LOCK button for 1 second. Continue holding both buttons together for 3 seconds. The locks will cycle to confirm programming. If not completed within 30 seconds of entering “99”, the session will time out and must be restarted from Step 2.
  • Step 5: Program a Second Remote (Optional) Press FAN UP until PGM FOB2 502 appears. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 with the second remote.
  • Step 6: Exit Diagnostic Mode Press either the RECIRC or RESET button to exit.

Additional Considerations:

Be Prepared: Complete all steps promptly—delays may cause the system to cancel the session.

Battery Check: Ensure all remotes have functioning batteries prior to programming.

System Capacity: The vehicle supports up to two remote fobs.

Confirmation: Lock cycling signals successful programming.
