Programming Guide for 1996 Mercury Cougar Keyless Entry Remote Fob
Importance: This guide enables you to program one or more keyless entry remote fobs to your 1996 Mercury Cougar. This vehicle uses a dedicated programming connector located in the rear quarter panel area. Following the steps in the exact order is essential for successful programming.
Programming Instructions:
- Step 1: Ensure the vehicle is parked securely with all doors closed.
- Step 2: Sit inside the vehicle and insert the key into the ignition.
- Step 3: Turn the key to the RUN or ACC position. Do not start the engine.
- Step 4: Locate the programming connector in the left rear quarter panel area—usually accessible behind the trim in the trunk or rear passenger side. The correct connector is not plugged into anything and contains two pins. Caution: If the connector is currently attached to another component, it is the wrong one. Do not unplug anything.
- Step 5: Use a small jumper wire or bent paperclip to briefly connect the two pins inside the connector. Maintain contact for about 1–2 seconds.
- Step 6: Listen for the door locks to automatically lock and unlock. This sound indicates the system has entered programming mode. If no sound is heard, wait 30 seconds and repeat from Step 3.
- Step 7: Within 20 seconds, press any button on the first remote you wish to program. The door locks will cycle again, confirming the remote has been successfully registered.
- Step 8: To program a second remote, press any button on that remote within 20 seconds of the previous one. The locks will cycle again to confirm the second remote.
- Step 9: Repeat Step 8 for any additional remotes (up to four total), waiting no more than 20 seconds between each.
- Step 10: When all remotes have been programmed, turn the ignition OFF.
- Step 11: The door locks will cycle one final time to indicate the vehicle has exited programming mode.
- Step 12: Test each remote outside the vehicle to ensure proper lock and unlock functionality.
