Programming Guide for 1996 Mercury Mystique Keyless Entry Remote Fob
Important Notice: The 1996 Mercury Mystique features onboard programming capability for keyless entry remotes. The process uses a programming connector located behind the glove box. All remotes must be programmed during the same session—remotes not included will be erased from memory.
Programming Instructions:
- Step 1: Sit in the driver’s seat and ensure all doors are fully closed.
- Step 2: Insert the ignition key and turn it to the RUN or ACCESSORY (ACC) position. Do not start the engine.
- Step 3: Locate the programming connector, positioned behind the glove box. You may need to open or remove the glove box to gain access.
- Step 4: Use a jumper wire or paperclip to momentarily connect the two terminals in the programming connector. When done correctly, the horn will chirp once, indicating that the system has entered programming mode.
- Step 5: Within a few seconds, press any button on the first keyless remote. The horn will chirp again to confirm successful programming of the first remote.
- Step 6: If programming a second remote, press any button on it within a few seconds of the first. The horn will chirp once more to confirm successful programming.
- Step 7: After all remotes have been programmed, turn the ignition key to the OFF position.
- Step 8: The horn will emit one final chirp to indicate that the programming session has ended.
- Step 9: Remove the jumper from the programming connector and return the glove box to its original position if removed.
- Step 10: Test each remote to ensure both lock and unlock functions work properly.
Additional Considerations: All remotes must be programmed during the same session. Any that are not included will no longer function. Timing is important. Press each remote button shortly after entering programming mode to avoid time-out. Ensure the remote batteries are in good condition before beginning the process to avoid errors.
