Programming Guide for 1996 Mercury Sable Keyless Entry Remote Fob

Important Notice: The 1996 Mercury Sable supports onboard programming for keyless entry remote fobs using a timed ignition cycle procedure. During this process, all remotes must be programmed together. If a remote is not included, it will be erased from the system's memory and must be reprogrammed.

Programming Instructions:

  • Step 1: Sit in the driver's seat with all doors closed and secure.
  • Step 2: Insert the key into the ignition switch without starting the vehicle.
  • Step 3: Turn the ignition key from the OFF position to the RUN position five times within 10 seconds, ending on the fifth cycle in the RUN position. This action must be completed smoothly and quickly. Once done correctly, the door locks will cycle to confirm that the vehicle has entered programming mode.
  • Step 4: Within 20 seconds, press any button on the first keyless remote fob. The door locks will cycle again to confirm that the first remote has been successfully programmed.
  • Step 5: If programming a second keyless remote, press any button on the second remote within 20 seconds of programming the first remote. The door locks will cycle again, confirming the programming of the second remote.
  • Step 6: After all remotes have been programmed, turn the ignition to the OFF position.
  • Step 7: The door locks will cycle one last time, signaling the end of the programming session.
  • Step 8: Remove the key from the ignition and test each remote to ensure that the lock and unlock functions are working properly.

Additional Considerations: All remotes must be programmed during the same session. Any remotes not included will no longer function and will need to be reprogrammed. Timing is crucial. If too much time passes between steps, the vehicle will automatically exit programming mode, and the process must be restarted. Ensure each remote has a working battery before starting the procedure to avoid any failed programming attempts.
