Programming Guide for 1996 Oldsmobile Ninety Eight Keyless Entry Remote Fob

Important Notice: The 1996 Oldsmobile Ninety Eight supports on-board programming for keyless entry remote fobs using the Data Link Connector (DLC). This process does not require any special equipment, but accurate identification of connector terminals is essential.

Programming Instructions:

  • Step 1: Insert the key into the ignition and leave it in the OFF position.
  • Step 2: Locate the Data Link Connector (DLC) beneath the dashboard on the driver’s side. This connector is trapezoidal in shape, with the wider part at the top. Terminal numbers are not marked, so refer to a diagram to correctly identify terminals 8 and 4.
  • Step 3: Confirm that metal pins are present in both terminal 8 and terminal 4. Use a suitable jumper wire to connect the two terminals. Leave the wire in place for the entire programming process.
  • Step 4: Once connected, the vehicle will automatically lock and unlock the doors, indicating it has entered programming mode.
  • Step 5: Ensure that all doors are completely closed before proceeding.
  • Step 6: Turn the ignition to the ON position (without starting the engine). The door locks will cycle again, confirming that the system is ready to accept remote input.
  • Step 7: On the first remote, press and hold both the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons simultaneously. After approximately 15 seconds, the doors will lock and unlock to confirm successful programming. Release the buttons.
  • Step 8: Within 60 seconds, repeat Step 7 for any additional remotes you want to program.
  • Step 9: After programming all remotes, remove the jumper wire from the DLC to exit programming mode.
  • Step 10: Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key.
  • Step 11: Test all remotes to verify proper operation.
