1996 Volkswagen Cabrio – Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Guide
Important Notice: This procedure is only valid for vehicles equipped with the factory-installed keyless entry system. It is not compatible with Hella systems or most aftermarket alarms. Before programming, confirm that your remote fob’s FCC ID matches the required specifications. Known compatible IDs include NBG730956 and M36HU01WT. If you are unsure of the FCC ID, consult a dealer to confirm the correct remote type for your vehicle.
Programming Instructions:
- Step 1: Ensure the remote fob(s) you are programming have working batteries.
- Step 2: Insert the first key into the ignition and turn it to the ON position. Do not start the engine.
- Step 3: Insert the second key into the driver’s side door lock. Turn the key to the unlock position (counterclockwise) and hold it there until the vehicle emits three short beeps. This typically takes 10 to 15 seconds.
- Step 4: Once the beeps are heard, return the key in the door lock to the center (neutral) position. Leave the key in the lock.
- Step 5: Press a button on the first remote fob you wish to program. The horn will beep once to confirm that it has been accepted.
- Step 6: If you have additional remotes, press a button on each one within a few seconds of the previous. The horn will beep twice for the second remote, three times for the third, and so on. All remotes must be programmed during the same session or previously programmed remotes may be erased.
- Step 7: Once all remotes have been programmed, turn the key in the door lock back to the unlock position (left) and hold it until the horn beeps three times again. This signals that the programming mode has ended.
- Step 8: Turn off the ignition and remove both keys.
- Step 9: Test each remote to verify proper operation of the lock and unlock functions.
