1996 Volkswagen Golf – Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Guide

Important Notice: This programming procedure is only compatible with 1996 Volkswagen Golf models equipped with the factory-installed keyless entry system. It will not work with Hella-branded systems or aftermarket alarm systems. If your vehicle did not originally include remote keyless entry, this process will only function if a factory alarm module is present. A white control unit located behind the headlight switch is a common indicator of a factory system. Before starting, confirm that the FCC ID printed on your remote matches the system installed in the vehicle. Accepted FCC IDs for this model include NBG730956 and M36HU01WT. Remotes with any other FCC ID will not be compatible. If unsure, consult a dealer to verify compatibility.

Programming Instructions:

  • Step 1: Confirm that each remote fob you wish to program has a fresh, fully functional battery.
  • Step 2: Insert the first key into the ignition and turn it to the ON position. Do not start the vehicle.
  • Step 3: Insert a second key into the driver's door lock. Turn the key to the unlock position (counterclockwise) and hold it in that position. Wait for the horn to sound three short beeps, which may take 10 to 15 seconds.
  • Step 4: Once the horn beeps three times, return the door key to the neutral (center) position, but do not remove the key from the lock.
  • Step 5: Press a button on the first remote fob. The horn will beep once, confirming that the remote has been accepted.
  • Step 6: If programming additional fobs, press a button on each one in sequence. The horn will beep twice for the second remote, three times for the third, and so on. Note: All remote fobs must be programmed during the same session. Any fob not included at this time will be erased from the system and will stop functioning.
  • Step 7: When all remotes have been programmed, turn the door key again to the unlock position (left) and hold it until the horn beeps three more times. This confirms that the vehicle has exited programming mode.
  • Step 8: Turn off the ignition and remove both keys from the ignition and door lock.
  • Step 9: Test each remote fob to ensure proper operation, including locking and unlocking the doors.
