1996 Volkswagen Jetta – Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Guide

Important Notice: This procedure applies only to vehicles equipped with the factory keyless entry system. Aftermarket systems may not respond to this method. All remote fobs must be programmed during the same session, or previously programmed remotes will be erased.

Programming Instructions:

  • Step 1: Ensure you have two physical keys available. One will be used in the ignition; the other will be used in the driver’s door lock.
  • Step 2: Sit in the driver’s seat and confirm that all doors are closed.
  • Step 3: Insert the first key into the ignition and turn it to the ON position (do not start the engine). Leave it in this position.
  • Step 4: Insert the second key into the driver’s door lock and turn it to the unlock position (counterclockwise). Hold the key in this position for approximately 10 to 15 seconds, until the vehicle emits three confirmation beeps.
  • Step 5: After the beeps, return the door key to the center (neutral) position, but do not remove it.
  • Step 6: Press any button on the first remote fob. The vehicle will beep once, indicating it has recognized the remote.
  • Step 7: If programming additional remotes, press a button on each remote, one at a time. The vehicle will emit two beeps for the second remote, three for the third, and so on.
  • Step 8: Once all remotes are programmed, turn the door key again to the unlock position (left) and hold it until the vehicle beeps three times, confirming that programming mode has been exited.
  • Step 9: Return the door key to center and remove it. Turn the ignition key to the OFF position and remove it as well.
  • Step 10: Test each remote to ensure lock and unlock functions work as expected.
