1996 Volkswagen Passat – Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Instructions
Important Notice: This programming method applies only to models equipped with the factory-installed keyless entry system—not the Hella aftermarket version. If your vehicle was not originally equipped with a remote system, this procedure will not function. FCC ID Compatibility: Ensure that your replacement remote fob has the same FCC ID as the original. Common FCC IDs for this system include NBG730956 and M36HU01WT. A mismatched FCC ID will prevent successful pairing. If you are unsure about the correct ID, a dealer can verify it for you.
Programming Procedure:
- Step 1: Gather all remote fobs that you plan to program. Any fobs not programmed during this session will be erased from memory.
- Step 2: Insert one key into the ignition and turn it to the ON position (do not start the engine).
- Step 3: Insert a second key into the driver’s side door lock and turn it to the unlock position (counterclockwise). Hold the key in that position.
- Step 4: Continue holding the key in the unlock position until you hear three horn beeps. This may take approximately 10–15 seconds and indicates that the vehicle is now in programming mode.
- Step 5: Return the key in the door to the neutral (center) position but leave it in place.
- Step 6: Press a button on the first remote fob. The horn will beep once to confirm successful registration of that fob.
- Step 7: For each additional remote, press a button to register it. The horn will beep again—once for the first fob, twice for the second, and so on—to confirm programming of each unit.
- Step 8: Once all fobs have been programmed, turn the door key to the unlock position (left) again. Hold until the horn beeps three times, signaling that programming mode has ended.
- Step 9: Remove the key from the ignition.
- Step 10: Test each remote to ensure all functions—locking and unlocking—are working properly.
