1997 BMW 3 Series – Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Instructions
Important Notice: The 1997 BMW 3 Series supports onboard programming for keyless entry remote fobs. A total of up to four remotes can be stored. Programming must be completed using the sequence below, and timing is critical for success.
Programming Procedure:
- Step 1: Make sure the vehicle is unlocked, and all doors, hood, and trunk are completely closed.
- Step 2: Open the trunk lid and leave it open.
- Step 3: Open the driver’s door, sit in the driver’s seat, and close the door.
- Step 4: Insert the key into the ignition, but do not start the engine.
- Step 5: Turn the ignition key to the ON position (just before engine start), then back to OFF, five times in rapid succession, ending in the OFF position. This step must be completed within 10 seconds. If successful, the alarm indicator light will illuminate and the siren will chirp, indicating the vehicle has entered programming mode. Note: This step also confirms whether your vehicle is equipped with a factory alarm system.
- Step 6: Open the driver’s door briefly, then close it again while remaining seated.
- Step 7: Press any button on the remote. The remote’s light will flash to confirm it has been successfully programmed.
- Step 8: To program additional remotes (up to four total), repeat Steps 6 and 7 for each one.
- Step 9: To exit programming mode: Open the driver’s door and leave it open. Close the trunk lid. Close the driver’s door.
