Programming Guide for 1997 Keyless Entry Remote Fob
Important Notice: The 1997 model supports onboard programming for keyless entry remote fobs. This procedure allows manual programming using the vehicle’s Data Link Connector (DLC) without the need for diagnostic tools. These steps apply only to remote fobs and do not cover ignition key programming.
Programming Procedure:
- Step 1: Sit in the driver’s seat and close all doors completely.
- Step 2: Insert the key into the ignition and leave it in the OFF position. Do not start the vehicle.
- Step 3: Locate the Data Link Connector (DLC) under the dashboard on the driver’s side. The connector is rectangular in shape and wider at the top—use this orientation to identify the correct terminals.
- Step 4: Identify terminals 8 and 4 on the DLC. The connector may not be labeled, so carefully count the pin positions to locate the correct ones. Make sure both terminals contain visible metal contacts.
- Step 5: Using a jumper wire, connect terminal 8 to terminal 4. Leave this wire in place throughout the entire programming session. The door locks will automatically cycle (lock and unlock) to confirm that the vehicle has entered programming mode.
- Step 6: Turn the ignition key to the ON position (just before engine start). The doors will lock again, confirming the system is ready to receive remote input.
- Step 7: On the first remote fob, press and hold both the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons simultaneously. Continue holding both buttons for approximately 15 seconds, or until the door locks cycle again. This indicates that the remote has been successfully programmed.
- Step 8: If you are programming additional remotes, repeat Step 7 for each one within one minute of programming the previous fob.
- Step 9: After all remotes have been programmed, turn the ignition to the OFF position.
- Step 10: Remove the jumper wire from the DLC.
- Step 11: Test all remotes to ensure they function properly for locking and unlocking.
Additional Considerations:
Maximum Capacity: This system can support up to two remote fobs.
Remote Battery Check: Ensure that each remote has a fully charged battery before programming.
Ignition Key Programming: This procedure does not program ignition or transponder keys. Ignition key programming requires specialized tools and must be performed by a qualified technician.
Repeat if Necessary: If the vehicle does not respond during programming, disconnect the jumper wire and restart the process from Step 1.
