Programming Guide for 1997 Buick Riviera Keyless Entry Remote Fob

(Onboard Programming – Step-by-Step Instructions)

Important Reminder: All remotes must be programmed in a single session. Remotes not programmed during this process will be erased from the system and must be reprogrammed.

Programming Procedure:

  • Step 1: Insert the ignition key and leave it in the OFF position.
  • Step 2: Locate the OBDII diagnostic port beneath the driver's side dashboard. → The connector is wider at the top. Although it is not labeled, you must identify terminal 8 and terminal 4 by position.
  • Step 3: Confirm that metal pins are present in terminals 8 and 4. → Connect these two terminals using a suitable jumper wire and leave it connected throughout the process. → The vehicle will respond by locking and then unlocking the doors, indicating entry into programming mode.
  • Step 4: Turn the ignition to the ON position (as far as possible without starting the engine).
  • Step 5: On the first remote, press and hold both the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons at the same time. → After up to 30 seconds, the doors will lock and unlock again, confirming successful programming. → Release the buttons.
  • Step 6: If there are additional remotes to program, repeat Step 5 for each one within one minute.
  • Step 7: After all remotes have been programmed, remove the jumper wire from the OBDII port.

Final Notes: Typically, a maximum of two remotes can be stored in the system. Ensure that all remotes are fully functional with fresh batteries before beginning. If the door locks do not respond during the process, verify terminal positions and restart the procedure.
