Programming Guide for 1997 Smart Keyless Entry Remote Fob – Catera
Important Notice: This vehicle does not support onboard programming for keyless entry remotes. All programming must be performed using specialized diagnostic equipment by a qualified automotive technician.
Programming Procedure:
- Step 1: Confirm that you have the correct replacement remote fob for the vehicle’s specifications.
- Step 2: Ensure the vehicle’s battery is fully charged and in good condition, as stable power is necessary during programming.
- Step 3: Prepare all remotes you intend to program, as some vehicles may erase prior fobs during the procedure.
- Step 4: Locate a qualified automotive technician or dealership service department with access to the appropriate diagnostic tools for key fob programming.
- Step 5: Schedule a service appointment or visit the technician’s location directly if your vehicle is drivable. This may be more cost-effective than requesting mobile service.
- Step 6: Provide proof of vehicle ownership, such as registration or title, as this is typically required before programming begins.
- Step 7: The technician will connect a scan tool or diagnostic interface to the vehicle’s onboard system through the OBD-II port.
- Step 8: Using the diagnostic equipment, the technician will access the vehicle’s security module and initiate the remote programming sequence.
- Step 9: Each new fob will be programmed individually, and previously recognized remotes may need to be re-registered during the same session.
- Step 10: Once the procedure is complete, the technician will verify functionality by testing the lock, unlock, and trunk functions on each programmed remote.
- Step 11: Collect all remotes and store spares in a safe location to avoid future lockouts or reprogramming needs.
