Programming Guide for 1997 Mazda 626 Keyless Entry Remote Fob

Important Notice: The 1997 Mazda 626 supports on-board programming for keyless entry remotes. During this process, all remotes—new and existing—must be programmed together in the same session.

Programming Instructions:

  • Step 1: Remove the key from the ignition.
  • Step 2: Confirm all doors are fully closed.
  • Step 3: Open the driver’s door and leave it open throughout the procedure.
  • Step 4: Insert the key into the ignition and turn it to the ON position (do not start the engine), then turn it OFF and remove the key.
  • Step 5: Repeat Step 4 two additional times, for a total of three ON/OFF cycles, making sure to remove the key each time.
  • Step 6: Close and open the driver’s door three times.
  • Step 7: Listen for a chime or buzzing sound, which confirms the vehicle has entered programming mode. If no sound is heard, wait 40 seconds and begin again from Step 1.
  • Step 8: Program the remote by pressing any button twice on the transmitter. After the remote is accepted, you will hear a chime or buzz. Repeat this step for each additional remote, up to a total of three, including previously programmed remotes.
  • Step 9: Once all remotes have been programmed, wait 15 seconds, or listen for four chimes confirming that programming is complete.
