1997 Mercury Grand Marquis

Programming Guide for 1997 Keyless Entry Remote Fob

Important Notice: This vehicle uses the factory-installed door-mounted keypad to enter remote programming mode. All remote fobs must be programmed during the same session. If the keypad times out or if any remote is skipped, the procedure must be repeated from the beginning.

Programming Instructions:

  • Step 1: Confirm that all doors are securely closed before beginning. Have all remote fobs ready, including any previously programmed ones.
  • Step 2: On the driver-side keypad, enter the 5-digit permanent entry code assigned to your vehicle.
  • Step 3: Within 5 seconds of pressing the final digit of the entry code, press the 1/2 button on the keypad.
  • Step 4: Wait for visual and audible confirmation—the door locks will automatically lock and then unlock, indicating the system has entered remote programming mode.
  • Step 5: Within 5 seconds, press any button on the first remote fob. The door locks will cycle again (lock and unlock) to confirm the remote has been successfully programmed.
  • Step 6: If programming a second remote, press any button on it within 5 seconds of programming the previous one. The locks will cycle once more to confirm successful registration.
  • Step 7: Repeat Step 6 for each additional remote, ensuring no more than 5 seconds passes between each one.
  • Step 8: If the keypad backlight turns off before all remotes are programmed, the vehicle will exit programming mode. Start over from Step 1 to reprogram all remotes.
  • Step 9: After all remotes have been successfully programmed, press the 7/8 and 9/0 buttons simultaneously on the keypad to exit programming mode.
  • Step 10: The door locks will cycle one final time, confirming that programming mode has ended.
  • Step 11: Test each remote to verify that the lock and unlock functions work correctly.

Additional Considerations: All remotes must be programmed during a single session. Any remotes not included will be erased from memory. Act quickly. Every step—especially remote programming—must be completed within a 5-second window. Watch the keypad backlight. If it turns off, the system has exited programming mode and no remotes will be stored. Verify remote battery strength before starting. Weak batteries can interfere with the signal during programming.
