Programming Guide for 1997 Mercury Mystique Keyless Entry Remote Fob

Important Notice: The 1997 Mercury Mystique supports onboard programming for keyless entry remote fobs. The procedure uses a programming connector located behind the glove box. All remotes must be programmed during the same session—any remote not included will be erased and must be reprogrammed.

Programming Instructions:

  • Step 1: Sit in the driver’s seat and ensure that all doors are closed completely.
  • Step 2: Insert the ignition key and turn it to the RUN or ACCESSORY (ACC) position. Do not start the vehicle.
  • Step 3: Locate the programming connector behind the glove box. You may need to open or temporarily remove the glove box to access it.
  • Step 4: Using a jumper wire or paperclip, briefly connect the two terminals in the programming connector. When done correctly, the horn will chirp once, indicating that the vehicle has entered programming mode.
  • Step 5: Within a few seconds, press any button on the first remote fob. The horn will chirp again to confirm successful programming of that remote.
  • Step 6: Press any button on the second remote fob (if applicable). The horn will chirp once more to confirm programming.
  • Step 7: After all desired remotes have been programmed, turn the ignition to the OFF position.
  • Step 8: The horn will chirp one final time to indicate that the programming session has ended.
  • Step 9: Remove the jumper wire from the programming connector and re-secure the glove box if it was removed.
  • Step 10: Test each remote to ensure the lock and unlock functions operate properly.

Additional Considerations: All remotes must be programmed during one session. Remotes not programmed at the same time will no longer work. Act promptly. If too much time passes between steps, the vehicle will exit programming mode automatically. Ensure the batteries in all remote fobs are fully functional to avoid unsuccessful programming.
