1997 Volkswagen Cabrio – Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Guide
Important Notice: This programming procedure applies only to vehicles equipped with the factory-installed keyless entry system. It will not work with Hella systems or most aftermarket alarms. If your vehicle was not originally equipped with remote keyless entry, this method will not be effective unless a factory alarm module is present (typically indicated by a white box located behind the headlight switch). Before beginning, ensure the FCC ID printed on your replacement remote fob matches your vehicle’s system. Known compatible FCC IDs include NBG730956 and M36HU01WT. If you are unsure of the correct FCC ID, consult a dealer for confirmation.
Programming Instructions:
- Step 1: Ensure that all remote fobs have working batteries installed. Weak or dead batteries may result in failed programming.
- Step 2: Insert the first key into the ignition and turn it to the ON position (do not start the engine).
- Step 3: Insert the second key into the driver's side door lock. Turn the key to the unlock position (counterclockwise) and hold it in that position until the vehicle horn beeps three times. This typically takes 10 to 15 seconds.
- Step 4: After the third beep, return the door key to the center (neutral) position. Leave the key in the door lock.
- Step 5: Press any button on the first remote fob. The horn will emit one beep, indicating that the fob has been successfully registered.
- Step 6: If you have additional fobs, press a button on the second remote within a few seconds. The horn will beep twice for the second fob, three times for the third, and so on. Note: All remote fobs must be programmed during the same session. Any remote not included during this process will be removed from the system and will no longer function.
- Step 7: Once all remotes have been programmed, turn the key in the door lock again to the unlock position (left) and hold it until the horn beeps three times. This signals that programming mode has ended.
- Step 8: Remove both the ignition key and the door key from the vehicle.
- Step 9: Test each remote fob to ensure that the lock and unlock functions are working correctly.
