1997 Volkswagen Golf (Early Model) – Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Guide
Important Notice: This programming procedure applies only to early-production 1997 Volkswagen Golf models equipped with the factory-installed keyless entry system. It is not compatible with Hella-brand systems or aftermarket alarm systems. If your vehicle was not originally equipped with remote keyless entry, this method will only work if a factory alarm module is installed. Look for a white control unit located behind the headlight switch as a typical indicator. Before you begin, confirm that the FCC ID printed on your remote fob matches the system installed in your vehicle. Known compatible FCC IDs include NBG730956 and M36HU01WT. Programming will fail if the FCC ID is incorrect. If you are unsure, consult a dealer for assistance before proceeding.
Programming Instructions:
- Step 1: Ensure that each remote fob you plan to program has a fully charged, working battery.
- Step 2: Insert the first key into the ignition and turn it to the ON position. Do not start the vehicle.
- Step 3: Insert a second key into the driver’s door lock. Turn it to the unlock position (counterclockwise) and hold it there for approximately 10 to 15 seconds, until the horn sounds three short beeps.
- Step 4: After the horn beeps, return the door key to the center (neutral) position, but leave the key in the door lock.
- Step 5: Press a button on the first remote fob. The horn will beep once, indicating successful programming.
- Step 6: If you are programming additional fobs, press a button on each one in sequence within a few seconds. The horn will beep twice for the second fob, three times for the third, and so on. Note: All remote fobs must be programmed during the same session. Any fob not included will be removed from memory and will no longer function.
- Step 7: When all remotes have been programmed, turn the door key again to the unlock position (left) and hold it until the horn beeps three times. This confirms that programming mode has ended.
- Step 8: Turn off the ignition and remove both keys from the ignition and the door lock.
- Step 9: Test each remote fob to ensure all functions—such as locking and unlocking—operate correctly.
