1997 Volkswagen Jetta – Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Guide
Important Notice: This procedure applies only to vehicles equipped with the original factory keyless entry system. If your vehicle has an aftermarket alarm system, this method may not be compatible. All remotes must be programmed during the same session to retain functionality.
Programming Instructions:
- Step 1: Make sure you have two physical keys available—one for the ignition and one for the driver’s door lock. Also, have all remote fobs you wish to program ready.
- Step 2: Sit inside the vehicle and ensure all doors are closed.
- Step 3: Insert the first key into the ignition and turn it to the ON position (do not start the engine). Leave the key in this position throughout the procedure.
- Step 4: Insert the second key into the driver’s door lock.
- Step 5: Turn the door key to the unlock position (counterclockwise) and hold it there for approximately 10 to 15 seconds, until the vehicle emits three beeps. This indicates entry into remote programming mode.
- Step 6: Return the door key to the center (neutral) position without removing it.
- Step 7: Press any button on the first remote fob. The vehicle will emit one beep, confirming the first remote has been successfully recognized.
- Step 8: If programming additional remotes, press a button on each one in sequence. The horn will beep twice for the second remote, three times for the third, and so on.
- Step 9: After all remotes have been programmed, turn the door key once more to the unlock position and hold it until the vehicle emits three final beeps, signaling that programming mode has been exited.
- Step 10: Return the door key to the center position and remove it. Then, turn the ignition key to the OFF position and remove it as well.
- Step 11: Test all remotes to confirm that lock and unlock functions are operating correctly.
