1998 BMW 3 Series – Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Instructions
Important Notice: The 1998 BMW 3 Series supports onboard programming for keyless entry remote fobs. You may program up to four remotes. Follow the steps below carefully and be mindful of the required timing to ensure successful programming.
Programming Procedure:
- Step 1: Ensure the vehicle is unlocked, and all doors, the hood, and the trunk are completely closed.
- Step 2: Open the trunk lid and leave it open.
- Step 3: Open the driver’s door, sit in the driver’s seat, and close the door.
- Step 4: Insert the key into the ignition without starting the engine.
- Step 5: Turn the key from the OFF position to the ON position (the position just before the engine starts), then back to OFF — repeat this five times, ending in the OFF position. This step must be completed within 10 seconds. If done correctly, the alarm light will turn on and the siren will chirp, indicating that the system is in programming mode. Note: This step also confirms the presence of the factory alarm system.
- Step 6: Open the driver’s door, then close it again while remaining seated in the vehicle.
- Step 7: Press any button on the remote fob. The remote’s indicator light will flash, confirming that the remote has been successfully programmed.
- Step 8: To program additional remotes (up to four), repeat Steps 6 and 7 for each one.
- Step 9: To exit programming mode: Open the driver’s door and leave it open. Close the trunk lid. Close the driver’s door. The siren will chirp again and the alarm indicator light will turn off, confirming that the programming process has ended.
