1998 Keyless Entry Remote Fob
Important Notice: This guide explains how to program remote keyless entry fobs for vehicles equipped with a factory-installed system that allows manual programming. The following steps apply only to remote fobs used for locking and unlocking doors. This procedure does not program ignition or transponder keys.
Programming Procedure:
- Step 1: Sit in the driver’s seat and ensure all vehicle doors are fully closed. Gather all remotes you intend to program before beginning.
- Step 2: Insert the key into the ignition cylinder. Do not turn the key—leave it in the OFF position.
- Step 3: Locate the vehicle’s Data Link Connector (DLC), which is mounted under the dashboard on the driver’s side. The connector is rectangular and wider at the top. Use this orientation to determine the correct pin locations.
- Step 4: Identify terminal positions 8 and 4 on the DLC. Although the connector may not be labeled, terminal numbers can be determined using the shape of the port. Ensure both terminals 8 and 4 contain metal pins.
- Step 5: Use a small jumper wire to create a connection between terminals 8 and 4. Keep this wire in place throughout the entire programming sequence. When the connection is properly established, the vehicle's door locks will cycle (lock and unlock), confirming that the system has entered programming mode.
- Step 6: Confirm once again that all doors are securely closed before proceeding.
- Step 7: Turn the ignition key to the ON position, just before engine start. Do not start the engine. The doors will lock again, indicating that the system is ready to receive signals from the remote.
- Step 8: On the first remote, press and hold the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons simultaneously. Continue holding both buttons for about 15 seconds. The door locks will cycle to confirm that the remote has been successfully programmed. Release the buttons once this occurs.
- Step 9: If programming additional remotes, repeat Step 8 for each one within one minute of the previous remote’s programming.
- Step 10: After all remotes have been programmed, turn the ignition key to the OFF position.
- Step 11: Carefully remove the jumper wire from the DLC to exit programming mode.
- Step 12: Test each remote to ensure the lock and unlock functions work properly.
Additional Considerations:
Supported Remotes: The system typically allows programming of up to four remotes.
Remote Battery Condition: Weak or dead batteries may prevent successful programming. Ensure all remotes have working batteries prior to starting.
Programming Scope: This method programs remote entry functions only—it does not program ignition keys or immobilizer components.
If Programming Fails: If the system does not respond at any stage, restart the process from Step 1.
