Programming Guide for 1998 Keyless Entry Remote Fob
Important Notice: The 1998 model is equipped with an onboard programming feature for keyless entry remote fobs. The procedure below allows manual programming using the Data Link Connector (DLC). This guide applies only to remote fobs and does not include ignition or transponder key programming.
Programming Procedure:
- Step 1: Sit in the driver’s seat and ensure all doors are fully closed.
- Step 2: Insert the key into the ignition and leave it in the OFF position. Do not start the engine.
- Step 3: Locate the Data Link Connector (DLC) under the driver’s side dashboard. This connector is rectangular and wider at the top—use this shape to orient yourself when identifying pin positions.
- Step 4: Identify terminals 8 and 4 on the DLC. The connector may not be labeled, so count the pin positions carefully. Make sure both terminals have metal contact pins.
- Step 5: Use a jumper wire to connect terminal 8 to terminal 4. Leave the jumper wire in place throughout the entire programming procedure. Within a few seconds, the door locks should cycle (lock and unlock) to indicate that the vehicle has entered programming mode.
- Step 6: Confirm the driver’s door remains closed and undisturbed during the process.
- Step 7: Turn the ignition key to the ON position (as far as it will go without cranking the engine). The door locks will cycle again, signaling that the system is ready to accept input from the remotes.
- Step 8: On the first remote fob, press and hold both the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons simultaneously. Hold them for about 15 seconds, or until the door locks cycle again. Release the buttons once the locks respond, confirming successful programming.
- Step 9: If programming a second remote, repeat Step 8 within one minute of programming the first remote.
- Step 10: Once all remotes have been programmed, turn the ignition key to the OFF position.
- Step 11: Remove the jumper wire from terminals 8 and 4 of the DLC.
- Step 12: Test each remote to confirm that all functions—lock, unlock, and panic—are working as expected.
Additional Considerations:
System Capacity: The vehicle can store a maximum of two remote fobs.
Battery Check: Ensure each remote has a functioning battery before beginning the procedure.
Ignition Key Programming: This process does not apply to ignition key programming. A technician with proper equipment is required for that service.
Repeat if Necessary: If a remote fails to respond, disconnect the jumper wire and restart the procedure from Step 1.
