Programming Guide for 1998 Buick Riviera Keyless Entry Remote Fob
(Onboard Remote Setup – Step-by-Step Instructions)
Important Reminder: All remote fobs must be programmed during the same session. Remotes not included will be erased from memory and must be reprogrammed to function.
Programming Procedure:
- Step 1: Insert the ignition key into the ignition and leave it in the OFF position.
- Step 2: Locate the OBDII diagnostic port under the driver's side dashboard. → The port is wider at the top. Although the terminals are not labeled, you must identify terminal 8 and terminal 4 based on position.
- Step 3: Confirm that terminals 8 and 4 contain metal contacts. → Use a suitable jumper wire to connect terminals 8 and 4. Leave this wire connected throughout the procedure. → The vehicle will respond by locking and then unlocking the doors, indicating it has entered programming mode.
- Step 4: Turn the ignition key to the ON position (as far as it goes without cranking the engine).
- Step 5: On the first remote, press and hold both the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons at the same time. → After up to 30 seconds, the vehicle will again lock and unlock the doors, confirming the remote has been successfully programmed. → Release the buttons.
- Step 6: If you have additional remotes to program, repeat Step 5 for each within one minute.
- Step 7: Once all remotes are programmed, remove the jumper wire from the OBDII port.
Additional Notes: A maximum of two remote fobs can typically be programmed to this vehicle. Ensure each remote has a working battery before beginning. If the door locks do not respond at any point, verify the terminal positions and start the procedure over.
