Programming Guide for 1998 Mercury Cougar Keyless Entry Remote Fob
Importance: These instructions detail the steps to program keyless entry remote fobs for your 1998 Mercury Cougar. This procedure enables your vehicle to recognize new or replacement remotes. Follow all steps precisely and within the specified time limits for successful programming.
Programming Instructions:
- Step 1: Sit in the driver’s seat and ensure all doors are closed.
- Step 2: Insert the key into the ignition.
- Step 3: Within 6 seconds, turn the ignition switch from the OFF position to the RUN position four times (OFF → RUN → OFF → RUN, etc.). Note: The final (fourth) turn must end in the OFF position.
- Step 4: Look at the LED indicator located in the clock/trip computer display. If the vehicle has entered programming mode successfully, the LED will illuminate solid.
- Step 5: Within 20 seconds of entering programming mode, press any button on the first remote you want to program. The LED should flash four times, confirming successful recognition of that remote.
- Step 6: If programming a second remote, press any button on the second remote within 20 seconds of programming the first. The LED may flash again to confirm, depending on the vehicle’s configuration.
- Step 7: Once all remotes have been programmed, turn the ignition to the RUN position to exit programming mode. The LED will turn off, signaling that the procedure is complete.
- Step 8: Remove the key from the ignition.
- Step 9: Test all programmed remotes to verify that they lock and unlock the vehicle doors properly.
