Keyless Entry Remote Programming Instructions – 1998 Oldsmobile Eighty Eight

Important Notice: This vehicle supports onboard programming via the diagnostic port. All remotes must be programmed during the same session. Any remotes not included will be erased from the system.

Programming Procedure:

  • Step 1: Insert the ignition key and leave it in the OFF position.
  • Step 2: Locate the Data Link Connector (DLC) beneath the driver’s side dashboard. The connector is trapezoidal. Though the terminals are not labeled, use this reference layout: Terminal 8: Top row, far right Terminal 4: Bottom row, second from the left
  • Step 3: Confirm that terminals 8 and 4 have metal contacts. Use a jumper wire to connect these two terminals. Keep the jumper wire in place throughout the programming process. Once connected, the door locks will automatically cycle (lock and unlock) to indicate the vehicle is in programming mode.
  • Step 4: Ensure all vehicle doors are closed.
  • Step 5: Turn the ignition to the ON position (do not start the engine). The doors will lock again, confirming that the system is ready.
  • Step 6: On the first remote, press and hold both the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons simultaneously. After about 15 seconds, the doors will lock and unlock again, confirming the remote has been successfully programmed. Release the buttons.
  • Step 7: Within one minute, repeat Step 6 for any additional remotes you wish to program.
  • Step 8: After programming is complete, remove the jumper wire from the diagnostic connector.
  • Step 9: Test all remotes to ensure they operate the locking system correctly.
