1998 Toyota 4Runner Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Instructions

For Vehicles with Factory Keyless Entry ECU

Important Note: These steps apply to vehicles equipped with a factory-installed keyless entry ECU. The control unit features a small recessed programming button and may be located in different areas depending on trim and configuration.

Step-by-Step Programming Procedure:

  • Step 1: Locate the Keyless Entry ECU. Look for a black box with three connectors and a recessed green programming button. Common locations include: Beneath the driver’s seat Under the driver’s side dashboard (near the fuse panel) Behind the passenger-side kick panel
  • Step 2: Initiate Programming Mode. Insert the key into the ignition and turn it to the ON position (do not start the engine). Using a small tool (such as a paperclip or precision screwdriver), press and hold the ECU’s programming button for 3 seconds. The status LED will illuminate for 5 seconds, indicating that the ECU is ready to receive remote signals.
  • Step 3: Program the Remote. While the status LED is lit (within 5 seconds): Press and release either the top or bottom button on the remote fob. Successful programming is confirmed by: The status LED turning off A single chirp from the Piezo buzzer A single flash from the exterior lights If the remote button is held too long, the alarm may sound. Simply press the top button again to reset it.
  • Step 4: Finalize Programming. Turn the ignition key to the OFF position. The remote is now stored in the ECU’s memory and should be functional.
  • Step 5: Program Additional Remotes (if needed). To add another remote, repeat Step 3 within the same 5-second window while the LED is still illuminated. If time expires, restart the procedure from Step 2.
