1998 Volkswagen Cabrio – Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Guide

Important Notice: This procedure is intended for vehicles equipped with the factory-installed keyless entry system and does not apply to Hella-branded or aftermarket alarm systems. If your vehicle did not originally come with remote keyless entry, programming will only work if the factory alarm module is installed. This is typically identified by a white control unit located behind the headlight switch. Before beginning, make sure the FCC ID printed on your remote matches the system already installed in your vehicle. Known compatible FCC IDs include NBG730956 and M36HU01WT. A mismatched FCC ID will prevent successful programming. If unsure, consult a dealer before proceeding.

Programming Instructions:

  • Step 1: Ensure that all remote fobs have fresh, working batteries installed to avoid communication issues during the process.
  • Step 2: Insert the first key into the ignition and turn it to the ON position. Do not start the engine.
  • Step 3: Insert a second key into the driver’s side door lock. Turn the key to the unlock position (counterclockwise) and hold it there until the horn beeps three times. This may take between 10 to 15 seconds.
  • Step 4: After hearing the three beeps, return the door key to the center (neutral) position. Leave the key in the door lock.
  • Step 5: Press any button on the first remote fob. The horn will beep once, confirming the fob has been successfully programmed.
  • Step 6: If you have additional remotes, press a button on each one in succession. The horn will beep twice for the second fob, three times for the third, and so on. Note: All remote fobs must be programmed during the same session. Any fobs not included will be removed from the system and stop functioning.
  • Step 7: Once all remotes have been programmed, turn the key in the driver’s door back to the unlock position (left) and hold it until the horn beeps three times again. This indicates that programming mode has ended.
  • Step 8: Remove the key from the ignition and the key from the door lock.
  • Step 9: Test each remote to ensure all buttons and functions, such as locking and unlocking the doors, are working properly.
