1998 Volkswagen Jetta – Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Guide
Important Notice: These instructions apply only to vehicles equipped with the factory keyless entry system. All remote fobs must be programmed during the same session—any previously working remotes that are not reprogrammed will be erased and will no longer function.
Programming Instructions:
- Step 1: Make sure you have two physical keys available—one for the ignition and one for the driver’s door lock.
- Step 2: Gather all remote fobs you intend to program and ensure their batteries are functioning.
- Step 3: Sit in the driver’s seat and confirm that all doors are closed.
- Step 4: Insert the first key into the ignition and turn it to the ON position (do not start the engine). Leave this key in place throughout the procedure.
- Step 5: Insert the second key into the driver’s door lock.
- Step 6: Turn the door key to the unlock position (counterclockwise) and hold it there for 10–15 seconds, until the vehicle emits three audible beeps. This indicates that the vehicle has entered programming mode.
- Step 7: Return the key in the door lock to the center position (do not remove it).
- Step 8: Press any button on the first remote fob. The vehicle will beep once, confirming successful programming of the first fob.
- Step 9: For each additional remote fob, press a button within a few seconds of the previous one. The system will respond with two beeps for the second fob, three for the third, and so on.
- Step 10: After programming all remotes, turn the key in the driver’s door to the unlock position once more and hold it until the system emits three beeps, indicating that programming mode has been deactivated.
- Step 11: Return the door key to the center position and remove it. Then, turn the ignition key to the OFF position and remove it as well.
- Step 12: Test all remote fobs to ensure proper lock and unlock functionality.
