1999 BMW 3 Series – Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Instructions
Important Notice: The 1999 BMW 3 Series supports onboard programming for keyless entry remote fobs. Up to four remotes can be programmed. Carefully follow the steps below, and observe the timing guidelines to ensure successful programming.
Programming Procedure:
- Step 1: Verify that all doors, the hood, and the trunk are fully closed.
- Step 2: Open the trunk lid and leave it open.
- Step 3: Open the driver’s door, sit in the driver’s seat, and close the door behind you.
- Step 4: Insert the key into the ignition, but do not start the engine.
- Step 5: Turn the ignition from the OFF position to the ON position (just before the engine would crank), then back to OFF. Repeat this process five times, ending in the OFF position. This step must be completed within 10 seconds. If successful, the alarm indicator light will illuminate, and the siren will chirp once to confirm the system has entered programming mode. Note: This step also confirms whether the vehicle is equipped with the factory alarm system.
- Step 6: Open the driver’s door, then close it again while remaining in the seat.
- Step 7: Press any button on the remote fob. The remote’s light will flash, indicating successful programming.
- Step 8: To program additional remotes (up to four total), repeat Steps 6 and 7 for each one.
- Step 9: To exit programming mode: Open the driver’s door and leave it open. Close the trunk lid. Close the driver’s door. The alarm system will chirp again and the indicator light will turn off, confirming the programming process is complete.
