1999 Mercury Mountaineer

Programming Guide for 1999 Keyless Entry Remote Fob

Important Notice: This vehicle supports onboard programming for keyless entry remote fobs using a timed ignition cycle. For programming to be successful, all remote fobs must be included during the same session. Any remote not programmed during this procedure will be erased from the vehicle’s memory.

Programming Instructions:

  • Step 1: Sit in the driver’s seat and make sure all doors are fully closed.
  • Step 2: Gather all remote fobs you plan to program. They must all be programmed during the same session.
  • Step 3: Insert the ignition key into the ignition switch, but do not start the engine.
  • Step 4: Within 10 seconds, turn the key from the OFF position to the RUN position eight times, ending on the eighth cycle with the key in the RUN position. This must be done quickly and consistently.
  • Step 5: After the eighth cycle, the door locks will lock and unlock automatically, indicating that the vehicle has entered programming mode.
  • Step 6: Within 20 seconds, press any button on the first remote fob. The door locks will cycle again to confirm successful programming.
  • Step 7: If you are programming a second remote, press any button on it within 20 seconds of the previous one. The locks will cycle again to indicate the second remote has been successfully added.
  • Step 8: Repeat Step 7 for any additional remotes, ensuring each is programmed within 20 seconds of the last.
  • Step 9: Once all remotes have been programmed, turn the ignition key to the OFF position.
  • Step 10: The door locks will cycle one final time, indicating that the programming session has ended.
  • Step 11: Remove the key from the ignition and test each remote to verify that the lock and unlock functions operate as expected.
  • Step 12: If any remote does not function, repeat the process from Step 1, making sure that all steps and timing requirements are followed carefully.

Additional Considerations: All remotes must be programmed together. Any that are not included in the session will be deactivated. Timing is essential. Delays during the ignition cycle or remote programming steps will cancel the procedure. Ensure the batteries in all remotes are in good condition prior to starting, as weak batteries may interfere with programming.
