Programming Guide for 1999 Mercury Tracer Keyless Entry Remote Fob
Important Notice: The 1999 Mercury Tracer supports onboard programming of keyless entry remote fobs using a timed ignition cycle. All remotes must be programmed together in one session. Any remote not programmed will be erased from memory and must be reprogrammed.
Programming Instructions:
- Step 1: Sit in the driver’s seat and ensure that all doors are securely closed.
- Step 2: Insert the key into the ignition and turn it from the OFF position to the RUN position eight times within 10 seconds, with the eighth cycle ending in the RUN position. Ensure the ignition cycles are quick and smooth. Once the system is in programming mode, the door locks will cycle (lock and unlock) to confirm that the vehicle is in programming mode.
- Step 3: Within 20 seconds, press any button on the first keyless remote fob. The door locks will cycle again to confirm that the first remote has been successfully programmed.
- Step 4: If programming a second keyless remote, press any button on the second remote within 20 seconds of programming the first one. The door locks will cycle again to confirm that the second remote has been successfully programmed.
- Step 5: Once all remotes have been programmed, turn the ignition key to the OFF position.
- Step 6: The door locks will cycle one final time, signaling that the programming session has ended.
- Step 7: Remove the key from the ignition and test each remote to ensure that the lock and unlock functions are working as expected.
Additional Considerations: All remotes must be programmed in the same session. Any remote that is missed will need to be reprogrammed. Ensure the timing is followed precisely. If too much time passes between steps, the system will exit programming mode and you will need to start the process again. Check the battery levels in each remote before starting to ensure that they are functioning properly.
