1999 Volkswagen Jetta

1999 Volkswagen Jetta – Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Guide

Important Notice: This procedure applies only to early 1999 models equipped with the factory keyless entry system. If your vehicle is fitted with an aftermarket system, this method will not be compatible. All remotes must be programmed during the same session, or any previously working remotes will be erased.

Programming Instructions:

  • Step 1: Ensure you have two physical keys available—one to use in the ignition and one for the driver’s door lock.
  • Step 2: Have all remote fobs you intend to program on hand and confirm that their batteries are functioning.
  • Step 3: Sit in the driver’s seat and confirm that all doors are closed before starting.
  • Step 4: Insert the first key into the ignition and turn it to the ON position (do not start the engine). Leave this key in the ignition for the entire procedure.
  • Step 5: Insert the second key into the driver’s door lock.
  • Step 6: Turn the door key to the unlock position (counterclockwise) and hold it in that position for approximately 10–15 seconds. The vehicle will emit three beeps, signaling it has entered programming mode.
  • Step 7: Return the door key to the center (neutral) position, but do not remove it.
  • Step 8: Press any button on the first remote fob. The vehicle will emit one beep, confirming it has recognized the remote.
  • Step 9: If you have additional remote fobs to program, press a button on each one in sequence. The vehicle will beep twice for the second remote, three times for the third, and so on.
  • Step 10: Once all remotes have been programmed, turn the door key again to the unlock position and hold it until the vehicle emits three beeps, confirming that programming mode has been exited.
  • Step 11: Return the door key to the center position and remove it. Then, turn the ignition key to the OFF position and remove it as well.
  • Step 12: Test each programmed remote to ensure that the lock and unlock functions are working properly.
