Programming Guide for 2000 Mercury Cougar Keyless Entry Remote Fob
Importance: This procedure allows you to program up to two remote fobs to operate your 2000 Mercury Cougar’s keyless entry system. All remotes must be programmed during the same session. Follow the timing closely to ensure the system accepts each transmitter.
Programming Instructions:
- Step 1: Sit in the driver's seat and ensure all doors are closed.
- Step 2: Insert the key into the ignition.
- Step 3: Turn the ignition switch from OFF to RUN (do not start the engine) a total of four times within 6 seconds. The sequence should be: OFF → RUN → OFF → RUN → OFF → RUN → OFF → RUN → OFF End the cycle in the OFF position.
- Step 4: Look at the LED light in the clock/trip computer display. If the vehicle has entered programming mode, the LED will light up continuously.
- Step 5: Within 20 seconds, press any button on the first remote fob. The LED in the display should flash four times, confirming successful programming of that remote.
- Step 6: If you have a second remote, press any button on it within 20 seconds of programming the first. The system will attempt to register the second remote in the same programming session.
- Step 7: After programming all desired remotes, turn the ignition to RUN to exit programming mode. The LED will turn off, confirming the end of the process.
- Step 8: Remove the key from the ignition.
- Step 9: Test each remote by pressing the lock and unlock buttons. The vehicle’s doors should respond to confirm that the programming was successful.
