2000 Toyota 4Runner Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Instructions

For Vehicles with Factory Keyless Entry System

Important Note: This procedure allows you to program new remotes, retain or erase previously stored remotes, or check the number of programmed remotes. Carefully follow all timing steps to ensure success.

Step-by-Step Programming Procedure:

  • Step 1: Preparation Make sure the key is removed from the ignition. The driver’s door must be open and unlocked. All other doors should be closed.
  • Step 2: Insert and Remove the Key Insert the key into the ignition without turning it, then remove it.
  • Step 3: First Lock/Unlock Cycle (within 40 seconds)
  • A) Using the driver’s power door lock switch, perform 5 lock/unlock cycles, starting with lock. (1 cycle = 1 lock + 1 unlock). Use an even pace—approximately one cycle per second.
  • B) Close the driver’s door, then reopen it.
  • Step 4: Second Lock/Unlock Cycle and Ignition Command (within 40 seconds)
  • A) Perform another 5 lock/unlock cycles, starting with lock, using the same pacing.
  • B) Insert the key into the ignition.
  • C) Turn the ignition key as follows based on your desired function: Once to ON → OFF = Add new remote without erasing existing remotes Twice ON → OFF → ON → OFF = Erase all existing remotes and add new one Three times = Check how many remotes are stored Five times = Erase all stored remotes without adding a new one
  • D) Remove the key from the ignition.
  • Step 5: Confirm Programming Mode Within 3 seconds, the door locks should automatically lock and unlock, indicating the vehicle is in programming mode. If the locks do not cycle, restart the process from Step 1.
  • Step 6: Program Remote(s) (within 40 seconds)
  • A) Press and hold the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the remote simultaneously for 1 second.
  • B) Release both buttons, then immediately press and hold the LOCK button for 2 seconds. If the door locks cycle once, programming was successful. If the locks do not cycle or cycle twice, repeat Step 6A and 6B.
  • C) Repeat the process for each additional remote you want to program.
  • Step 7: Exit Programming Mode Close the driver’s door to complete the process. Test each remote to confirm functionality.
