2000 Volkswagen Cabrio – Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Guide

Important Notice: This procedure applies only to 2000 Volkswagen Cabrio models equipped with the factory-installed keyless entry system. It will not work with Hella systems or most aftermarket alarm systems. If your vehicle did not originally come with keyless entry, this process will only work if a factory alarm module is present—typically indicated by a white control unit located behind the headlight switch. Before beginning, confirm that the FCC ID printed on your remote fob matches the vehicle’s system. Known compatible FCC IDs include NBG730956 and M36HU01WT. A mismatched FCC ID will prevent successful programming. If you are unsure of the correct FCC ID, consult a dealer before proceeding.

Programming Instructions:

  • Step 1: Ensure that all remote fobs have working batteries. Weak or dead batteries may result in failed programming.
  • Step 2: Insert the first key into the ignition and turn it to the ON position. Do not start the engine.
  • Step 3: Insert a second key into the driver's side door lock. Turn the key to the unlock position (counterclockwise) and hold it there for approximately 10 to 15 seconds, until the horn beeps three times.
  • Step 4: Once the horn has beeped, return the key in the door lock to the center (neutral) position. Leave the key in the lock.
  • Step 5: Press any button on the first remote fob. The horn will beep once, indicating that the remote has been successfully programmed.
  • Step 6: If you have additional remotes, press a button on each one within a few seconds of the previous. The horn will beep twice for the second fob, three times for the third, and so on. Note: All remotes must be programmed in the same session. Any fobs not included during this procedure will be erased and will no longer function.
  • Step 7: Once all desired remotes have been programmed, turn the door key again to the unlock position (left) and hold it until the horn beeps three times, signaling the end of programming mode.
  • Step 8: Remove both the ignition key and the door key.
  • Step 9: Test each remote fob to confirm that all functions, including locking and unlocking, are working as expected.
