2001 Mercury Mountaineer

Programming Guide for 2001 Keyless Entry Remote Fob

Important Notice: The 2001 Mercury Mountaineer features onboard programming for keyless entry remotes. During this process, all remotes must be programmed in the same session. Any remote not included will be erased from the system and will need to be reprogrammed.

Programming Instructions:

  • Step 1: Sit in the driver’s seat and ensure all vehicle doors are fully closed.
  • Step 2: Have all remote fobs you plan to use during this session within easy reach.
  • Step 3: Insert the key into the ignition switch but do not start the engine.
  • Step 4: Within 10 seconds, turn the ignition key from the OFF position to the RUN position (do not crank the engine) eight times, ending on the eighth cycle with the key in the RUN position. You must complete all eight cycles smoothly and quickly.
  • Step 5: If performed correctly, the door locks will automatically lock and unlock, indicating that the vehicle has successfully entered programming mode.
  • Step 6: Within 20 seconds, press any button on the first remote fob. The door locks will cycle again, confirming successful programming of that remote.
  • Step 7: If you have a second remote, press any button on it within 20 seconds of the previous remote. The locks will cycle once more to confirm successful programming.
  • Step 8: Repeat Step 7 for each additional remote you are programming. Make sure each remote is activated within 20 seconds of the last to keep the session active.
  • Step 9: When you’ve finished programming all remotes, turn the ignition key to the OFF position.
  • Step 10: The door locks will cycle one final time, indicating that the vehicle has exited programming mode.
  • Step 11: Remove the key from the ignition and test each remote to ensure that lock and unlock functions work as expected.

Additional Considerations: Program all remotes at once. If you skip a remote, it will no longer function and must be reprogrammed later. Timing is essential. Each step must be performed within the time limits to maintain programming mode. Ensure each remote has a fully charged battery before starting the procedure to avoid programming issues.
