2001 Subaru Forester Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Instructions

Important Note: These steps are used to program the remote locking and alarm functions of your keyless entry remote. You may program up to four remotes during a single session.

Step-by-Step Programming Instructions:

  • Step 1: Sit in the driver’s seat with all doors and the rear hatch fully closed and unlocked.
  • Step 2: Open the driver’s door, then close it once.
  • Step 3: While pressing the brake pedal, insert the key into the ignition and turn it from the OFF position to the ON position (do not start the vehicle—just turn the key so the dash lights illuminate), then back to OFF. Repeat this cycle ten times quickly.
  • Step 4: After the tenth cycle, if performed correctly and within the time limit, the horn will sound once, indicating the system has entered programming mode.
  • Step 5: Open the driver’s door, then close it once.
  • Step 6: Press any button on the remote fob. The horn will beep twice, confirming that the remote has been successfully programmed.
  • Step 7: To program additional remotes, repeat Step 5 (open and close the driver’s door), then press a button on the next remote. The horn will beep twice again for each successfully added remote.
  • Step 8: When finished programming all remotes, remove the key from the ignition. The horn will sound three times, indicating the system has exited programming mode.
  • Step 9: Wait approximately two minutes before testing the remotes.
  • Step 10: Test the remote by pressing the Lock button. The doors should lock and the security system will arm.
  • Step 11: Press the Unlock button once to disarm the system and unlock the driver’s door. Press it a second time to unlock all doors and the rear hatch.
