2001 Subaru Outback Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Instructions

Important Notice: The 2001 Subaru Outback supports onboard programming for keyless entry remote fobs. You can program up to four remotes during a single session. Follow the instructions below carefully to ensure successful setup.

Programming Procedure:

  • Step 1: Sit in the driver’s seat and confirm that all doors and the trunk or liftgate are closed and unlocked.
  • Step 2: Open and close the driver’s door once.
  • Step 3: Insert the key into the ignition. Turn it from the OFF to the ON position (just until the dash lights turn on) and back to OFF—ten times rapidly within 15 seconds.
  • Step 4: If performed correctly, the vehicle will emit a single horn beep, confirming that it has entered programming mode.
  • Step 5: Open and close the driver’s door one more time to proceed.
  • Step 6: Press any button on the remote you want to program. The horn will beep twice to indicate that the remote has been successfully registered.
  • Step 7: To add more remotes (up to four total), repeat the sequence: open and close the driver’s door, then press a button on the next remote. The horn should beep twice after each successful addition.
  • Step 8: Once all remotes are programmed, remove the key from the ignition. The horn will beep three times, confirming the system has exited programming mode.
  • Step 9: Wait approximately two minutes before testing the remotes to ensure the system resets properly.
  • Step 10: Press the Lock button on a programmed remote. The vehicle should lock and the alarm should arm.
  • Step 11: Press the Unlock button once to disarm the alarm and unlock the driver’s door. Press it again to unlock all other doors and the trunk.
