Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Instructions for a 2001 Toyota Highlander

Important Notice: This guide is for programming the keyless entry remote functions only (lock, unlock, panic). It does not include programming of the ignition key, which requires professional assistance with specialized equipment.

Programming Procedure:

  • Step 1: Vehicle Preparation Ensure the key is out of the ignition. Open the driver's door (leave it unlocked) and ensure all other doors are closed.
  • Step 2: Initiate Programming Sequence (within 5 seconds) Insert the key into the ignition (do not turn it) and remove it. Repeat: Insert the key again (do not turn it) and quickly remove it.
  • Step 3: First Door Cycle (within 40 seconds) Close and then open the driver's door. Repeat: Close and open the driver's door again. Insert the key into the ignition (do not turn it) and pull it out.
  • Step 4: Complete Key and Door Sequence (within 40 seconds) Close and then open the driver's door. Again, close and open the driver's door. Insert the key into the ignition and leave it in the ignition. Close the driver's door. Turn the ignition to ON (do not start the vehicle) and then quickly back to OFF. Remove the key from the ignition.
  • Step 5: Enter Programming Mode Within 3 seconds, the vehicle’s power door locks should cycle (lock and then unlock) indicating that the programming mode has been successfully entered. If the locks do not cycle, start over from Step 1.
  • Step 6: Remote Programming (within 40 seconds)
  • A. Press and hold the lock and unlock buttons on the remote simultaneously for 1.5 seconds.
  • B. Immediately after, press and hold the lock button alone for 2 seconds.
  • C. The door locks should cycle (lock and then unlock) to indicate successful programming of the remote. If the door locks cycle twice, the programming was not accepted; repeat steps A and B for this remote.
  • D. Repeat steps A, B, and C for each new remote you want to program.
  • Step 7: Exit Programming Mode Open the driver’s door to exit the programming mode.
  • Step 8: Test the Remote(s) Test all remote functions (lock, unlock, and panic) to ensure they are working correctly.
  • Step 9: Repeat If Necessary If a remote does not function as expected, repeat the entire programming procedure, ensuring all steps are followed closely.

Additional Considerations:

  • Program All Remotes at Once: Any remote not included in the programming sequence may no longer work and will require reprogramming. Ignition Key Programming: Programming an ignition key involves additional steps and equipment that are typically handled by professional service providers. Verify All Remotes: After programming, ensure all remotes are tested and functioning as expected to avoid security issues.
