2001 Volkswagen Cabrio – Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Guide

Important Notice: This programming procedure applies only to 2001 Volkswagen Cabrio models equipped with the factory-installed keyless entry system. It will not work with Hella-brand systems or most aftermarket alarm systems. If your vehicle did not originally include remote keyless entry, this procedure will only work if a factory alarm module is installed. Factory systems are typically identified by a white control unit located behind the headlight switch. Before you begin, verify that the FCC ID printed on your replacement remote fob matches the system in your vehicle. Known compatible FCC IDs include NBG730956 and M36HU01WT. If you are unsure which remote is compatible, consult a dealer before attempting programming. Remotes with mismatched FCC IDs will not function.

Programming Instructions:

  • Step 1: Ensure all remote fobs have fresh batteries installed. Weak or dead batteries may result in failed programming.
  • Step 2: Insert the first key into the ignition switch and turn it to the ON position. Do not start the engine.
  • Step 3: Insert a second key into the driver’s side door lock. Turn the key to the unlock position (counterclockwise) and hold it in that position until the horn beeps three times. This usually takes between 10 to 15 seconds.
  • Step 4: After the third beep, return the key in the door lock to the center (neutral) position, but leave the key in the lock.
  • Step 5: Press a button on the first remote fob. The horn will beep once, confirming successful registration.
  • Step 6: If programming additional remotes, press a button on each one within a few seconds. The horn will beep twice for the second fob, three times for the third, and so on. Note: All remotes must be programmed during the same session. Remotes not included in this process will be erased from the system.
  • Step 7: Once all remotes have been programmed, turn the key in the door lock again to the unlock position (left) and hold it until the horn beeps three times. This signals the system has exited programming mode.
  • Step 8: Remove the ignition key and the door key from the vehicle.
  • Step 9: Test each remote to ensure that all functions—such as locking and unlocking—are working properly.
