2002 Mitsubishi Montero Sport – Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Instructions

Important Notice: The 2002 Montero Sport supports onboard programming for remote key fobs. Up to two remotes can be registered. Follow the steps below carefully, performing each action quickly to ensure the vehicle enters programming mode.

Programming Procedure:

  • Step 1: Locate the vehicle’s data port under the dashboard on the driver’s side.
  • Step 2: Insert the key into the ignition, but do not turn it—leave it in the OFF position.
  • Step 3: Identify terminals 1 and 4 in the diagnostic port and verify that both have metal contacts.
  • Step 4: Use a jumper wire to connect terminals 1 and 4. Keep this connection intact for the entire programming process. Double-check terminal positions before proceeding.
  • Step 5: Within 10 seconds of connecting the jumper, turn the ignition switch to the ACC position, then immediately back to OFF. Repeat this cycle two more times, for a total of three quick ACC-to-OFF turns, all within about two seconds. System Confirmation: If performed correctly, the door locks will automatically cycle once, confirming the system has entered programming mode.
  • Step 6: Within 10 seconds, press the LOCK button on the first remote three times. The doors will lock and unlock once to confirm that the remote was successfully programmed.
  • Step 7: If programming a second remote, repeat Step 6 within 60 seconds of completing the first. The system will confirm registration of the second remote with another lock/unlock cycle.
  • Step 8: After all remotes are programmed, disconnect the jumper wire from the data port.
  • Step 9: Remove the ignition key to exit programming mode.
  • Step 10: Test all remotes to verify that lock and unlock functions operate as expected.
