2002 Subaru Legacy Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Instructions

Important Notice: The 2002 Subaru Legacy supports onboard programming for its keyless entry remote fobs. You can program up to four remotes during the same session. Carefully follow the steps below for proper setup.

Programming Procedure:

  • Step 1: Sit in the driver’s seat and make sure all doors, including the trunk or liftgate, are fully closed and unlocked.
  • Step 2: Open and then close the driver’s door one time.
  • Step 3: Insert the key into the ignition. Turn the key from the “OFF” position to the “ON” position (so the dashboard lights come on, but do not start the engine), then back to “OFF.” Repeat this cycle ten times rapidly. This must be completed within 15 seconds.
  • Step 4: If performed correctly, the horn will beep once, indicating that the system has entered programming mode.
  • Step 5: Open and close the driver’s door one more time to confirm readiness.
  • Step 6: Press any button on the remote you wish to program. The horn will beep twice, confirming successful programming of that remote.
  • Step 7: To program additional remotes, repeat the process by opening and closing the driver’s door, then pressing a button on the next remote. The horn will beep twice for each successfully added remote. You may program up to four remotes total.
  • Step 8: Once all remotes are programmed, remove the key from the ignition. The horn will beep three times, signaling the end of programming mode.
  • Step 9: Wait about two minutes before testing the remote functions.
  • Step 10: Press the Lock button on a remote. The doors should lock, and the vehicle’s alarm system should engage.
  • Step 11: Press the Unlock button once to disarm the alarm and unlock the driver’s door. Pressing Unlock again should unlock the remaining doors and the trunk.
