2002 Subaru Outback Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Instructions

Important Notice: The 2002 Subaru Outback allows onboard programming for keyless entry remotes. Up to four remotes can be programmed in a single session. Follow the procedure carefully and complete each step within the required time frame.

Programming Procedure:

  • Step 1: Sit in the driver’s seat. Ensure all doors and the liftgate or trunk are closed and unlocked.
  • Step 2: Open and close the driver’s door once.
  • Step 3: Insert the key into the ignition. Turn it from the OFF to the ON position (dash lights on, do not start the vehicle), then back to OFF—ten times quickly within 15 seconds.
  • Step 4: If done correctly, you’ll hear a single horn beep, indicating that the system has entered programming mode.
  • Step 5: Open and close the driver’s door one more time to continue.
  • Step 6: Press any button on the remote you wish to program. The horn will beep twice, confirming the remote has been successfully registered.
  • Step 7: To program additional remotes (up to four total), repeat the process: open and close the driver’s door, then press a button on the next remote. Each successful registration will be confirmed by two horn beeps.
  • Step 8: Once all remotes are programmed, remove the key from the ignition. The horn will sound three times, signaling the end of programming mode.
  • Step 9: Wait approximately two minutes before testing the remotes.
  • Step 10: Press the Lock button on a remote. The doors should lock and the alarm system will activate.
  • Step 11: Press the Unlock button once to disarm the alarm and unlock the driver’s door. Press it again to unlock the remaining doors and the trunk.
