2002 Toyota 4Runner Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming Instructions

For Vehicles with Factory Keyless Entry System

Important Note: This procedure allows you to program one or more remote fobs. You may also retain or erase previously stored remotes, depending on the ignition sequence used. Be sure to follow all timing steps carefully.

Step-by-Step Programming Procedure:

  • Step 1: Preparation Remove the key from the ignition. Ensure the driver’s door is open and unlocked. Make sure all other doors are closed.
  • Step 2: Insert and Remove the Key Insert the key into the ignition without turning it, then remove it.
  • Step 3: First Lock/Unlock Cycle (within 40 seconds)
  • A) Using the driver’s power lock switch, perform 5 lock/unlock cycles, starting with lock. (1 cycle = 1 lock + 1 unlock). Maintain a steady pace—about one cycle per second.
  • B) Close, then reopen the driver’s door.
  • Step 4: Second Lock/Unlock Cycle and Ignition Sequence (within 40 seconds)
  • A) Perform 5 more lock/unlock cycles, starting with lock, using the same rhythm.
  • B) Insert the key into the ignition.
  • C) Turn the key based on your desired programming mode: Once to ON → OFF = Add a new remote while keeping existing ones Twice = Erase all remotes and program new one Three times = Check number of currently programmed remotes Five times = Erase all remotes without programming new ones
  • D) Remove the key from the ignition.
  • Step 5: Confirm Programming Mode Within 3 seconds, the door locks should automatically lock and unlock, confirming entry into programming mode. If the locks do not cycle, restart from Step 1.
  • Step 6: Program Remote(s) (within 40 seconds)
  • A) Press and hold the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the remote simultaneously for 1 second.
  • B) Immediately release both buttons, then press and hold the LOCK button alone for 2 seconds. If the locks cycle once, the remote has been successfully programmed. If the locks cycle twice or do not respond, repeat Step 6A and 6B.
  • C) Repeat Step 6A and 6B for each additional remote.
  • Step 7: Exit Programming Mode Close the driver’s door to complete the process. Test each remote to confirm that all functions are operating correctly.
